No serious injuries were reported after a collision between a marked RCMP vehicle and an SUV Wednesday evening at the intersection of Highway 14 and 1st Street in Winkler.

Winkler Police responded to the call around 6:20 p.m. and found both vehicles damaged. They were both ultimately towed from the scene.

It was determined the collision had occurred just prior to 6 p.m. RCMP had been responding to a single motorcycle crash south of Plum Coulee when the cruiser was struck as it entered the Winkler intersection.

Witnesses indicated the RCMP vehicle had its emergency lights and sirens activated while traveling east on Highway 14 and approached a red light at the intersection. There were some northbound vehicles that had stopped to allow the RCMP vehicle to pass, and as it slowly continued eastward through the intersection, with its emergency equipment still activated, it was struck on the passenger side by a northbound SUV which drove through.

The Winkler Fire Department assisted with traffic control around the intersection. An RCMP Traffic Collision Analyst attended the scene, and the intersection remained closed for the evening while the RCMP completed its investigation.

The collision remains under investigation.

After the incident, Winkler Police are reminding the public that under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act, emergency vehicles including police, fire, and ambulances with emergency lights and sirens activated, have the right of way on the roadway and at intersections.
