Shortly after 2 p.m. Monday afternoon Winkler Fire Department was called out to a brush and structure fire along Highway 14 in the city's northeast corner.

Chief Richard Paetzold says when crews arrived, they found two properties involved. Grass, brush and an outbuilding were on fire, and the flames were progressing toward a house on the yard.

"One crew initiated a direct attack on the head end of the fire to prevent it from getting to the house, and then proceeded to attack the building that was on fire," he explained. "Two other crews worked the flanks of the fire."

One structure was severely damaged, and a second sustained minor fire damage. The remaining structures on the yard, and the evergreen trees, were saved.

There were no injuries, and the cause remains under the investigation.

Paetzold noted this was a fortunate outcome considering the very windy conditions.
