It has been years since Carman had a movie theater, but the Chamber of Commerce will be bringing movies back to town this summer. Families will be gathering up lawn chairs, blankets, and snacks for outdoor movies in Carman at Ryall Park. The Chamber is mounting an outdoor movie screen with hopes of creating a fun, social atmosphere downtown.

Heidi Sandulak is a member of the executive, and has been working on getting the equipment. She says it was more difficult than they anticipated. They searched for packages and in the end decided to start from scratch. Walinga in Carman designed and manufactured the mounting equipment, and Sandulak says the big screen is being produced by Winkler Canvas. She notes the beautiful timber frame structure is an ideal spot for these kind of events, and adds the screen will roll up in order to be out of sight when not in use.

Sandulak explains the idea for the project came when Access Credit Union held a movie night in the park last summer. The Chamber applied for a grant to cover the expenses, and are now planning their first movie night. They have not picked a date, but Sandulak feels it will be ready and operational by late June or early July. They anticipate as soon as the sun sets a little earlier they will host quite a few special movie events that are family friendly.
