Fraudsters are at it again in the area and the Altona Police Service is warning the public not to fall for this latest scam.

According to police, scammers are targeting people via telephone and notifying them that their social insurance number has been suspended due to alleged "illegal activity". In fact, several reports of the scam were made to the Altona Police Service by Monday morning.

It appears these fraudsters are hitting the area through a robo-dialer and police warn the phone calls could go on for some time.

The police-issued statement indicates that should you be contacted, you are urged to simply hang up. Additionally, police stress not to dial any call-back number or provide the callers with any personal or banking information, including your social insurance number.

If you receive such a call and are uncertain, you can contact Service Canada with your concerns.

Altona Police also encourage anyone who receives this call to visit the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre web site and fill out a report.
