Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Bergen continues to lead the fight to keep Parliament open.

May 26, the Liberals were joined by the NDP in passing a motion that would adjourn Parliament until late September. She says the NDP voted with the Liberal minority government in exchange for support of a new national paid sick leave program.

"We want to deliver better results for Canadians. We know that in a democracy, when the government is challenged, when it has to defend what it is doing and improve it, when it has to listen to us on our opposition days and take a position, it is better for Canadians," Bergen says. "That is the whole reason Conservatives want Parliament to sit."

She notes while the Liberal party has cited health risks around COVID-19 for the move, Bergen says it will make it difficult to hold the government accountable.

"The committee that's been set up in its place is really just a facade, it's not Parliament," she adds.

Bergen says Parliament is needed more during a crisis.

"When a government is spending billions of dollars... there has to be oversight. And this government is running from it."
