The Town of Altona's public works team has hit the streets repairing potholes that formed over winter.

"I don't know what it was with this winter, but it seems to have been really hard on our asphalt streets. It must have been a uniqute freeze/thaw cycle because we've got potholes," explained Public Works Manager Clint Derksen.

He is asking for the community's patience as his team works to fill the divots, noting there was a shipping delay with the fill material.

Additionally, the team has been short-staffed due to sickness.

Derksen was asked if the rain in this weekend's forecast could further delay the fill work.

"(It's) not optimal, but it will still need to proceed because the potholes are big," he said.

Overall, the weather this spring hasn't been ideal for the team's regular to-do list of the season, with Old Man Winter making a regular return.

"We had all of the ditches open, they were all drained and some were even dry already, and now they're plugged up again," described Derksen after last weekend's Colorado Low moved through. "I'm a little hesitant to get the excavators to open them up again because it is costly."

He's hopeful the rain forecast in this weekend's Colorado Low will melt the remaining snow and open up the ditches once again.
