Rain over the past week will have a bigger impact on alfalfa than grasses.

Manitoba Agriculture Forage Specialist Glenn Friesen notes the moisture may cause some producers to think about taking an additional cut before the first killing frost.

He adds growers must keep in mind alfalfa's critical fall harvest period, defined as approximately the final six weeks, depending on location, of the growing season before the first killing frost.

If the decision is made to harvest during the critical period, the benefits of the additional forage harvested should be weighed against the potential for winterkill and early spring yield losses.
