While the spring flood risk remains low to moderate for Southern Manitoba, the provincial government isn't going to let its guard down.

Whether it's a wet year or a dry year, Glen Simard, the MLA for Brandon-East, says government will act to protect communities and assets quickly.

"Although the current forecast is in our favour, living in Manitoba that can change quickly," he said.

A perfect example of that, he noted, was the late snowstorm we saw in April 1997 that caught us off guard.

"So, although forecasters say there is a low to moderate chance of flooding in parts of Manitoba, we're going to continue to monitor those situations very closely, and that people and their communities are protected."

Meantime, the Minister noted the provincial government will be announcing a series of flood mitigation projects on Tuesday that are set to happen across Manitoba.

"A year without major flooding will allow communities to do the work they need to protect themselves for the future," he explained. "In Manitoba, if you wait ten minutes, the weather will change, and we understand that we need to be ready and diligent in our planning processes."

Simard made the comments in this week's episode of the Premier's Report, filling in for Premier Wab Kinew who was set to depart of Washington, D.C. and New York.
