Only 1 fire started in the eastern region yesterday, and it was extinguished in short-order.

Fire program manager Tom Mirus says it happened in the morning when a tree branch fell onto a power line at Star Lake.

He credits the quick thinking of local cottagers and the quick action of the local fire department for keeping it at bay until water bombers arrived to finish the job.

That was the only forest fire burning in the east yesterday which had Mirus scratching his head.

He's not sure if it's hard work or luck there aren't more fires burning because the conditions are right for it.

28 forest fires were burning in all of Manitoba yesterday, that's 10 fewer fires than the day before.
