In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Manitoba government is also preparing for spring flooding in the Red River Valley.

Premier Brian Pallister admits social distancing may be impossible if Manitobans are called upon to help sandbag or in the event families needs to be evacuated.

"I'm very concerned about that. I've asked those exact questions and we're anticipating some response. Clearly, on the issue of physical distancing, I've done lots of sandbagging in my life and it's impossible to do sandbagging and physical distancing at the same time."

Pallister says, however, he's optimistic they might be able to dodge those kinds of situations based on the latest projections along the Red River.

"Our projections are very good. We're never, ever going to take it for granted because Mother Nature can throw a curveball at us, however, we are optimistic and hopeful that based on the latest projections our flood likelihood is greatly reduced from what we might have thought some weeks ago."
