A by-election has been triggered in the R.M. of Morris.

The vacant council seat was left after veteran councilor, Barry Fraese, passed away at the end of July.

"(Barry) was a great individual, a team player. He was willing to work with people, but he was courageous and he did not fear to present an opinion that was contrary to the general mood...he stood up for all residents (and) I really respected that," said Reeve Ralph Groening. "We truly miss Barry's contribution to R.M. of Morris politics."

As a result, a by-election has been scheduled for November 3, 2021 where one successful candidate will be elected at-large. Groening encourages residents to take advantage of this shortened term with a general municipal election slated for October 2022.

"It'll be good experience for people to try their hand at municipal governance," noted Groening.

Prospective candidates must register with the Senior Elections Officer at the R.M. of Morris municipal office located in Morris, between August 27-September 28. They must be at least 18 years of age, and have been a resident or tax payer in the municipality for a minimum of six months.

"We are elected at-large, so every council-person shares responsibility for the entire Municipality. There's no wards," noted Groening. "And so one of the qualities that I have always emphasized our present Council to consider, is to think in terms of what everyone and anyone in the municipality requires and needs. So, you must think past your own community...somebody who is able and ready and prepared to look at the larger picture of governance."
