A local school division says there is only one thing they can do to handle school shootings.

This comes in light of school shootings in Quebec and Pennsylvania over the past month.

Kelly Barkman is Superintendent of Red River Valley School division.

He says all they can do is be prepared.

Barkman says they have emergency plans in place that are updated annually.

He says they also get the students to exercise the plans every once in a while.

Barkman adds there are several things the division does to be proactive against such situations.

The division holds meetings with R.C.M.P liaisons and practices emergency plans.

Barkman says trying to prevent those situations is impossible, because they are unexpected, and if the person has the will to harm they will.
