Border Land School Division Trustee for Emerson Elmer Penner, Superintendent Tim Mendel, Emerson School Principal Colin Toms, Emerson Mayor Wayne Arseny, Parent Council Co-Chair Tasha Pow and other Board members turn the sod on the Emerson KinderCollege.

Parents in Emerson are one step closer to having a daycare facility in the community. After two years of campaigning, sod was turned Tuesday on the Emerson KinderCollege daycare which will be located in rented space at Emerson School.

Tasha Pow, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors, says construction also got underway Tuesday. She adds now that work has started there is hope among parents the facility will become a reality. There are currently no other daycare centres in Emerson, and Pow says she has been relying on friends for childcare.

Pow notes a lot of behind the scenes work has already taken place with establishing a policy and code of conduct. She says next will be getting licensing and hiring staff, including Level 2 Childcare Providers and a Director.

The estimated cost of the daycare is $200,000, and Pow says they have already raised $16,000. She adds their goal right now is to obtain $50,000 for a fence and outdoor equipment.

The centre is slated to open in September.
