Three athletes, two builders and one team were inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame Thursday night in Winnipeg. The class of 2023 includes two-time Manitoba Marathon champion Chris Glowach; Kelly Stefanyshyn, who captured three medals including gold in the pool at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and Milt Stegall, who spent 14 seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and was the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2002. Brent Bottomley from Cross-country Skiing and Alex Gardiner from Athletics were inducted in the Builders category. Terry Braunstein's 1965 Brier championship team along with Don Duguid, Ron Braunstein and Ray Turnbull were also inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. 


Ben Dalke, Tyler Park and Brock Schwaluk scored two goals each as the Carman Beavers won their home opener 7-4 over the Altona Maroons Thursday night in the lone SEMHL game. Scott Atkins had the other Beavers goal. Adam Henry had two goals and an assist for the visiting Maroons who were playing their season opener. Haydon Friesen and Geordie Keane also scored for Altona. Carman netminder Luke Zacharias made 52 saves. Cole Kehler faced 47 shots in net for the Maroons. The Beavers lost their season opener 6-3 to the Red River Wild last Saturday in St. Jean. 


Eli Bergman had a three-point night with two goals and an assist as the Miller Aces defeated the PCI Trojans 7-4 at Stride Place. Reece Fehr, Tyson Froese, Griffin Hildebrand, Ziko Pankratz and Brady Peters also scored for the Aces who improved to 3-1 on the season and moved into a first place tie with the Morris Mavericks in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League. Kevin Vince had a pair of goals for Portage Collegiate while the rest went to Carson Inman and JJ Oke. 


The Winnipeg Jets dropped a 5-2 decision to the Vegas Golden Knights. Jonathan Marchessault had a hat trick for the defending Stanley Cup champions who extended their season-opening point streak to 11 games. Kyle Connor and Alex Iafallo did the goal scoring for the Jets. Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves. The Jets (4-4-2) play their second of a three-game road trip Saturday afternoon against the Arizona Coyotes. 


The Manitoba Moose assigned defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin to the ECHL's Norfolk Admirals. The 20-year-old Belarus native recorded 59 points (14G, 45A) in 65 games with the OHL's Flint Firebirds during the 2022-23 season. Kuzmin, who was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the third round of the 2021 NHL Draft, registered 103 points (32G, 71A) in 122 career OHL games.


The Canadian Football League unveiled its 2023 divisional all-star teams, with 11 members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers named to the West squad. Honoured as West Division All-Stars are quarterback Zach Collaros, running back Brady Oliveira, receivers Nic Demski and Dalton Schoen, offensive tackles Stanley Bryant and Jermarcus Hardrick, guard Pat Neufeld, defensive end Willie Jefferson, cornerback Demerio Houston, defensive back Evan Holm, and safety Brandon Alexander.


The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 6-1 win over Mexico in their first Super Round game at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Boissevain’s Zoe Hicks had a pair of hits including a two-run homer in the seventh. Team Canada improved to 1-1 in the Super Round after carrying over a 3-2 loss to Puerto Rico from the preliminary round, while Mexico dropped to 0-2. The United States (1-0) and Puerto Rico (1-0) will play today, followed by Canada’s matchup with the United States. Mexico and Puerto Rico will play the last Super Round game. The top two teams will play for the gold medal on Saturday, and the next two will play for bronze. Canadian athletes have won 126 medals including 37 gold, 39 silver and 50 bronze.


Kerri Einarson will play for bronze at the 2023 Pan Continental Championships at the Kelowna Curling Club. Einarson, vice-skip Val Sweeting, second Shannon Birchard and lead Briane Harris lost 8-4 to South Korea’s Eunji Gim Thursday night. The four-time reigning Canadian Women's champions will face Tabitha Peterson of the United States in the third place game. Brad Gushue will meet Andrew Stopera of the United States in the men's semifinals.
