The Pembina Valley Twisters will begin their pre-season schedule with a pair of games this weekend at the Ed Goulding Arena in Winnipeg. The Twisters will meet the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge Twins tonight and the Stonewall Jets on Saturday afternoon. 48 players registered for tryout camp which got underway Tuesday. Pembina Valley will open the 2023-24 Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League season on September 29th against the River East Royal Knights in Morris. 


Todd Fanning is in a tie for 17th place heading into the final round of the 61st Canadian Senior Men's Golf Championship at the Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton, British Columbia. Fanning, who was one-over par 73 Thursday and has a 54-hole total of plus four, is eight shots back of third round leader Ken Griffith of Red Deer. Dan Scanlon was 76 and is plus 12; reigning Manitoba champion Jay Doyle was 77 and is plus 14 while Ken Warwick was 80 and is plus 19.


Winnipeg Goldeyes third baseman Dayson Croes has been named American Association Rookie Position Player of the Year. The native of Noord, Aruba hit .351, good for fourth in the American Association, while his 135 hits were best in the league. Croes was chosen as the 12-team circuit’s post-season All-Star at the hot corner Tuesday. 


The Canadian men's basketball team will play for bronze at the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Manila. Canada lost 95-86 to Serbia in todays semifinal. RJ Barrett had 23 points for the Canadians who will meet either the United States or Germany in the third place game. 


Forwards Marie-Philip Poulin & Laura Stacey along with goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens have signed with the Professional Women's Hockey League's Montreal franchise. All three were members of the Canadian team that won Olympic gold in 2022. Poulin is the all-time active leader in scoring for Canada's national team with 103 goals and 107 assists in 175 career games. The league opens its inaugural season in January with teams in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Boston, New York and Minneapolis-St. Paul. The PWHL’s first-ever entry draft will take place on September 18th. Minneapolis-St. Paul will pick first, followed by Toronto, Boston, New York, Ottawa, and then Montreal.


The CFL and CFLPA say an independent third-party organization will test air quality and provide measurements for future games. This comes after an investigation was launched over the conditions in Monday's game between the Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders. If the measurement shows an Air Quality Health Index reading of seven, then the game will be halted. The game at McMahon Stadium was played despite Environment Canada's Air Quality Health index for Calgary measuring between eight and 10 throughout the day.
