The Carman/Miami Cougars are Zone 4 High School Fastpitch champions. The Cougars edged the PCI Saints 2-1 in the final of Zone Tournament Wednesday in Portage. Carman/Miami defeated the Morden Thunder 3-1 and Portage Collegiate slipped past Northlands Parkway 3-2 in the semifinals. The Cougars will represent Zone 4 at the Provincial High School Fastpitch Championship next weekend in Brandon.


The PCI Trojans are Zone 4 Baseball champions. Portage Collegiate outscored Garden Valley 20-19 in the Zone final Wednesday night in Altona. PCI edged the Miller Aces 7-6 in the semifinals while the Zodiacs shaded the Morden Thunder 7-6. The Trojans advance to the Provincials next weekend in Brandon. 


The Altona Bisons suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night at Koskie Field. Tyler Smith tossed a no-hitter and struck out 10 as the defending Manitoba Junior Baseball League champion Elmwood Giants blanked the Bisons 4-0.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes gave up four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and lost 14-13 to the Sioux Falls Canaries. Goldeyes designated hitter Logan Hill had two hits and five rbi and first baseman David Washington drove in four runs for the Fish who lead 9-0 after two innings.


The round robin is over at the Centennial Cup in Estevan. Braden Dube scored three times as the Dauphin Kings downed the Soo Thunderbirds 6-1. The Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions finished first in Group B and have a bye to the semifinals along with the Brooks Bandits who finished first in Group A. The Flin Flon Bombers will meet the Pickering Panthers and Trent Crane, William Irvine and the rest of the Summerside Western Capitals will face College Francais de Longueuil in the quarterfinals on Friday. 


The Capital Region Junior Hockey League will operate with six teams this fall. Beausejour will join the St. Malo Warriors, North Winnipeg Satelites, Arborg Ice Dawgs, Lundar Falcons and Selkirk Fishermen. The Beausejour Blades played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for two seasons before relocating to Steinbach in 2010. The Beausejour Shock competed in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League from 2010-2013.


The Winnipeg Ice dropped a 4-2 decision to Edmonton. Carter Souch had a pair of goals for the Oil Kings who lead the Western Hockey League's best-of-seven Eastern Conference final three games to one. Owen Pederson had both goals for the Ice. Game five goes Friday at Rogers Place.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released receiver Jalen Saunders who signed a two-year deal with the football club just over a month ago. Saunders last played with Hamilton in 2018. He registered 45 receptions for 739 receiving yards and two touchdowns in nine games for the Tiger-Cats, prior to suffering a season-ending knee injury.
