The Winkler Flyers and Steinbach Pistons are going the distance in their Manitoba Junior Hockey League opening round series. Malachi Klassen made 32 saves as Winkler defeated Steinbach 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Centennial Arena. Gavin Waltz, Zach Nicolas and Logan Fillion did the goal scoring for the Flyers who have won back-to-back elimination games and evened the best-of-seven East Division semifinal at three games apiece. The deciding seventh game goes Tuesday at the T.G. Smith Centre. The Virden Oil Capitals have joined the Portage Terriers in round two of the MJHL playoffs. Owen LaRocque stopped 29 shots as the Caps edged the OCN Blizzard 3-2 at Tundra Oil & Gas Place and took that West Division semifinal in six games. 


Nikolaj Ehlers scored twice and Kyle Connor potted his 30th goal of the season as the Winnipeg Jets downed New Jersey 6-1 Sunday night at Canada Life Centre. Pierre-Luc Dubois, Nino Niederreiter and Morgan Barron a second period penalty shot also scored for the Jets. Winnipeg is still two points ahead of Calgary for the second wildcard in the NHL's Western Conference and both teams have five games remaining.  The Flames edged the Anaheim Ducks 5-4 Sunday. The Jets host Calgary Wednesday night.


Manitoba champions Jordon McDonald and Zoey Terrick both won bronze at the Canadian Junior Curling Championships in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. McDonald, third Reece Hamm, second Elias Huminicki and lead Cameron Olafson defeated Landon Rooney of Ontario 7-4. Terrick along with third Jaycee Terrick, second Jensen Letham and lead Tessa Terrick outscored Tori Zemmelink of Ontario 8-6.


Canada's Brad Gushue has a 2-2 record heading into day three of the 2023 World Men's Curling Championship in Ottawa. Gushue, Mark Nichols, E.J. Harnden and Geoff Walker defeated Anton Hood of New Zealand 8-2 in session four. Gushue gave up two in the ninth end and a steal of two coming home and lost 8-6 to Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway on the evening draw. The five-time Brier champion has just one game today and that's against Riku Yanagisawa of Japan (3-0) at 1 p.m. 


The Toronto Raptors clinched a spot in the NBA's play-in tournament. Pascal Siakam had 36 points and Fred VanVleet added 20 points and a career high 20 assists in Toronto's 128-108 victory over the Charlotte Hornets. Toronto's win, coupled with the Brooklyn Nets' 111-110 victory over the Utah Jazz, locked up the Raptors' post-season spot. The seventh through 10th-place teams in each conference advance to the play-in portion of the post-season.


Corey Conners has won the Texas Open in San Antonio for a second time. The Listowel, Ontario native fired a final round four-under par 68 and finished with a 72-hole total of 15-under par 263. Sam Stevens was one shot back. Conners also won the Texas Open in 2019.
