The Winkler Flyers selected defenseman Dustin Bell of Brandon with their first round pick (10th overall) in the 2023 Manitoba Junior Hockey League Draft. The Flyers also took forward Connor Vandal of Winnipeg in round two; defenseman Isaac McLeod-Catcheway of Thompson & forward Oli Chenier of Winnipeg in round three; defenseman Kaeson Fisher of Brandon in round four; goaltender Burke Hood of Winnipeg, forward Nate Lodewyks of La Salle & forward Jett Lajoie of Winnipeg in round five; forward Owen Martin of Oakbank in round six; forward James Franklin of Winnipeg in round seven and forward Avery Samels of Souris in round eight. Forward Noah Oughton of St. Laurent was selected first overall by the Winnipeg Freeze. Forward Jaxon Hildebrand of Altona was chosen by the Neepawa Titans & defenseman Kasen Mateychuk of Dominion City went to the Steinbach Pistons in round two; defenseman Cade McCallum of Carman was selected by the Dauphin Kings & defenseman Cohen Pilkington of Altona went to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines in round three. Forward Ryder Wolfe of Carman was chosen by Dauphin in round four. 


The Altona Bisons and Pembina Valley Orioles split a doubleheader Sunday at Artic Field in Winkler. The Bisons plated five runs in the top of the fifth inning and won the opener 9-4. Isaiah Letkeman had two singles and a triple for Altona. Pembina Valley took the second game 7-5. Ethan Klassen had three hits and Darius Peters drove in three runs for the Orioles. Both teams have identical 5-5 records. 


The Winnipeg Goldeyes losing streak has reached six games. The Fish gave up five runs in the third and sixth innings and fell 14-5 to the Lake Country DockHounds. Winnipeg third baseman Dayson Croes singled twice and extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Max Murphy homered for the Goldeyes who begin a six-game homestand Tuesday night when they face the Chicago Dogs at Shaw Park.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers open the 2023 CFL season Friday night at home against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Bombers first practice session of the week is today from 11:50 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. at IG Field. 


Braxton Kuntz of Breezy Bend, Addison Kartusch of St. Charles and Blair Neal of Rossmere captured Golf Manitoba's Provincial Match Play Championships Sunday at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Kuntz shaded Marco Trstenjak of Elmhurst 1-up in the men's final. Kartusch defeated Clara Peake of Binscarth 2 & 1 in the women's final. Neal beat Dwayne Heinrichs of Bel Acres 1-up in the senior men's final.
