The PCI Trojans picked up their first win of the 2023-24 Zone 4 High School Hockey League season Sunday afternoon at Stride Place. Kevin Vince scored twice and Ben Matthews-McCulley had four assists as Portage Collegiate defeated Pembina 7-5. Kade Friesen, Tyler Huber, Kade Maryniuk, JJ Oke and Allen Spence also scored for the Trojans who started the season 0-4. Tegan Follis, Gavin Johnston, Easton Lounsbury, Cole Patenaude and Brad Sloane replied for the Tigers.
The Pembina Valley Hawks dropped a 5-3 decision to the Eastman Selects at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Jayden Penner, Acoyen Fehr and Liam Goertzen did the goal scoring for the Hawks. Pembina Valley netminder Bryson Yaschyshyn made 22 saves. The Selects lead 1-0 and 4-1 at the period breaks.
Team Manitoba lost its opening preliminary round game 6-3 to Ontario Red at the 2023 National Women’s U18 Hockey Championship in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. Morgan Smith of Winnipeg scored a pair of power play goals for Team Manitoba. The other went to Sara Manness of La Salle. Manitoba’s next game is Monday (8:30 p.m.) against host B.C.
The Pembina Valley Twisters scored two goals in each period en route to a 6-3 victory over the Transcona Railer Express at the East End Arena. Alex Van Denyze had two goals and two assists for the Twisters. The rest went to Derek Wiebe, Keston Worley, Jonathan Dyck and Merek Degraeve.
Daniel Torgersson scored the lone Manitoba goal as the Moose fell 4-1 to Rockford at Canada Life Centre. Brett Seney and Joey Anderson had power play goals for the IceHogs.
Paddler Katie Vincent of Mississauga and breaker Phillip Kim of Vancouver were Canada’s flag-bearers for Sunday’s closing ceremony of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Vincent won sprint canoe gold with Sloan Mackenzie of Windsor Junction, Nova Scotia. Kim became the first Pan Am Games gold medallist in men’s breaking. Canadian athletes won 164 medals including 46 gold, 55 silver and 63 bronze.
