The Winkler Flyers pre-season schedule is over. The Flyers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Selkirk Steelers Sunday at the Centennial Arena. Lucas Brennan scored the winner 3:45 into overtime for the Steelers. Winkler defenseman Cole Mackenzie potted a power play goal with 13 seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 1-1. Malachi Klassen made 24 saves in net for the Flyers who open the 2022-23 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season Friday against the Winnipeg Freeze at Bell MTS Iceplex. 


The Pembina Valley Hawks lost their pre-season opener 5-2 to the Yellowhead Chiefs in Russell. The Hawks, who will attend the Calgary Fire Firestarter tournament this weekend, open the 2022-23 Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League season Saturday, October 1st against the Interlake Lightning in Morden. 


Cody Eakin has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Calgary Flames. The 31-year-old Winnipeg native played the last two seasons with the Buffalo Sabres. He previously played with the Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars, Vegas Golden Knights and Winnipeg Jets. Eakin, who was selected by Washington in the third round (85th overall) of the 2009 National Hockey League Draft, has 110 goals and 256 points in 701 NHL games.
