Garden Valley boys and Miller girls won the GVC Invitational high school soccer tournaments this past Saturday in Winkler. The Zodiacs defeated the Northlands Parkway Nighthawks 2-1 in the boys final while the Aces edged the Minnedosa Chancellors 2-1 in the girls final. The Rosenort Redhawks swept the Leo Remillard Renards 25-13, 25-23 in the final of the Northlands Parkway varsity girls volleyball tournament in Winkler. 


Colton Wiebe and Kyle Van Deynze scored two goals each as the Pembina Valley Twisters downed the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge Twins 5-2 Sunday at the Century Arena in Winnipeg. Mark Plett also scored for the Twisters who play their final exhibition game Friday against the Jets in Stonewall. Pembina Valley will open the 2023-24 Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League season September 29th in Morris against the River East Royal Knights. 


Danny Zhilkin scored the shootout winner as the Winnipeg Jets prospects defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 at the 2023 Young Stars Classic in Penticton. Jacob Julien and Colby Barlow scored in regulation for the Jets. Thomas Milic stopped 39 of 41 shots in regulation and overtime, plus two of the three shots he faced in the shootout.  The Jets wrap up the three-game, four-day tournament when they face the Calgary Flames today at noon. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have begun their bye week. The Bombers, who lost 29-23 to the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton Saturday afternoon, face the East Division leading Toronto Argonauts Friday, September 29th at IG Field. Winnipeg has clinched a playoff spot and leads the CFL West Division standings with a 10-4 record. The B.C. Lions are in second place at 9-4.
