The Altona Bisons will face the St. James A’s in the Manitoba Junior Baseball League semifinals. Ethan Giesbrecht allowed four hits and struck out 12 Orioles as Altona defeated Pembina Valley 11-1 Friday night at Access Field in the third and deciding game of their quarterfinal. Isaiah Letkeman score three runs and Maddux Mateychuk had three hits and drove in the clinching 11th run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bisons and A’s meet tonight at Optimist Park in game one of their best-of-three semifinal. The defending champion Elmwood Giants take on the Carillon Sultans tonight at Koskie Field in game one of their series. The Sultans downed the St. Boniface Legionaires 8-3 and took that quarterfinal two games to one.


Team Manitoba finished the round robin with a 1-3 record at Baseball Canada’s Women’s Invitational Championship at Quarry Park in Stonewall. Manitoba lost 8-4 to B.C. and then won its round robin finale in dramatic fashion Friday night. Team Manitoba plated five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and rallied for an 8-7 victory over Saskatchewan.


Luis Ramirez allowed four hits over seven innings and struck out seven as the Winnipeg Goldeyes downed the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2. Ramirez retired 12 of the final 14 batter he faced. Justin Thompson homered for the Fish who are six games over .500.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are still perfect. Zach Collaros threw touchdown passes to Rasheed Bailey and Dalton Schoen and backup quarterback Dru Brown sealed the win with a three-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter as the Bombers defeated the Edmonton Elks 24-10 at Commonwealth Stadium and improved to 7-0 on the season.


Defending champion Braxton Kuntz of Breezy Bend is minus eight and leads 2020 champion Marco Trstenjak of Elmhurst by six shots heading into today’s final round of the Provincial Men's Amateur Golf Championship at Elmhurst. Tyson Ehnes of Lorette (74-74) is in a tie for 10th place at plus six. Delwyn Doerksen of Oakview (74-77) is plus nine and Josh Neufeld of Oakview (76-81) is plus 15. 61 players made the cut which was plus 18. Craig Neufeld of Oakview (82-83) was plus 23; Ryan Orchard of Carman (88-86) was plus 32; Reed Peters of Oakview (90-86) was plus 34; Sam Sullivan of Carman (86-91) was plus 35 and Terrace Unrau-Abbott of Winkler (112-108) was plus 78.


Cala Korman of Killarney fired a final round 11-over par 84 and finished in 70th place at the 108th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship at Westmount Golf& Country Club in Kitchener, Ontario. Monet Chun of Richmond Hill, Ontario was even par 73 on Friday and won the National Championship by two shots over Alissa Xu


The Winnipeg Jets have signed forward Pierre-Luc Dubois to a one-year contract worth $6 million. The 24-year-old native of Ste-Agathe-Des-Monts, Quebec had 28 goals and 32 assists in 81 games with the Jets last season. Winnipeg also agreed to terms with defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic on a three-year contract with an average annual value in the NHL of $766,000 and signed forward Jeff Malott to a two-year contract with an average annual value in the NHL of $762,500.
