Garden Valley girls will face Sanford and Garden Valley boys will meet Elmwood in the finals of the Provincial AAA High School Varsity Basketball Championships in Winnipeg. Rosenort will take on Hapnot Collegiate of Flin Flon in the consolation final at the AA girls championship in Somerset. Elm Creek will face Ross L. Gray of Sprague in the consolation final at the A girls championship in Glenboro. Dufferin Christian will meet Wawanesa in the third place game and Elm Creek will take on the St. Laurent in the consolation final at the A boys championship in Glenboro.


The Pembina Valley Hawks season came to an end Friday night in Brandon. Brady Turko had a goal and three assists as the Wheat Kings downed Pembina Valley 4-2 and swept the best-of-five Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League semifinal in three straight. Liam Goertzen and Acoyen Fehr did the goal scoring for the Hawks.


The Pembina Valley Twisters are into round two of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League playoffs. Slade Sotheran’s power play goal 4:17 into overtime lifted Pembina Valley past Raiders 2-1. The Twisters swept the best-of-seven quarterfinal in four straight. Brett Bergman had Pembina Valley’s lone goal in regulation.


The Winkler Flyers dropped a 5-3 decision to the Steelers in Selkirk. Zach Nicolas, Trent Penner and Avery Anderson scored for the Flyers who play their regular season finale Sunday against the Blues in Winnipeg.


Tyler Toffoli scored twice, Josh Morrissey had three assists and Laurent Brossoit made 21 saves in the Winnipeg Jets 6-0 victory over the Anaheim Ducks at Canada Life Centre. Dylan DeMelo, Kyle Connor, Nate Schmidt and Mason Appleton also scored for the Jets.


Jeff Malott scored the only goal of the shootout as the Manitoba Moose shaded the Chicago Wolves 3-2. Thomas Milic stopped 21 shots and all five Wolves shootout attempts.


The World Women’s Curling Championship begins today in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Rachel Homan will play her round robin opener this afternoon against Anna Hasselborg of Sweden.


Ryan Wiebe will meet Braden Calvert in the A event qualifier at the Provincial Mixed Curling Championship in Neepawa. Calvert defeated Sean Grassie 9-1 and Wiebe beat Cory Chambers 8-4.
