The host Portage Terriers will meet the Battlefords North Stars and the Brooks Bandits face the Ottawa Senators in today’s semifinals at the Centennial Cup. Bailey Monteith made 36 saves and Brock MacDonald and Kian Calder scored power play goals as the Terriers edged the Yarmouth Mariners 2-1 while the Senators doubled up on the Collingwood Blues 4-2 in the quarterfinals on Friday.


The Seattle Thunderbirds are Western Hockey League champions. Thomas Milic made 30 saves as the Thunderbirds beat the Winnipeg Ice 3-1 and took the best-of-seven final four games to one. Evan Friesen had the lone goal for the Ice. The T-Birds will represent the WHL at the Memorial Cup which begins next Friday in Kamloops.


Oakbank’s Brett Howden scored 1:35 into overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights past the Dallas Stars 4-3 in game one of the NHL’s best-of-seven Western Conference final. Brandon’s Zach Whitecloud chipped in with a pair of assists for Vegas.


Canada will face Switzerland today at the World Hockey Championship in Riga, Latvia. Canada has 11 points and is one point back of the Swiss in the race for first place in Group B.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes won their home opener Friday night. The Fish plated five runs in the first inning and added four more in the fourth and downed the Lake Country DockHounds 10-4 at Shaw Park. Max Murphy had three hits and drove in two runs for the Goldeyes.
