Team Canada has suffered it’s first loss at the 2022 World Men’s Hockey Championship in Helsinki. Canada dropped a 6-3 decision to Switzerland. Adam Lowry, Kent Johnson and Drake Batherson did the goal scoring for the Canadians who saw their preliminary round record fall to 4-1. The Swiss lead Group A with a 5-0 record. Canada’s next game is Monday against Denmark.


The Winnipeg Ice lost 5-4 in overtime to the Edmonton Oil Kings in game one of the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference final. Tyler Horstmann scored the winner 67 seconds into OT. Benjamin Zloty had a pair of goals for the Ice who rallied from a 4-1 third period deficit. Owen Pederson and Mikey Milne also scored for the home team. Game two in the best-of-seven series goes tonight (7 p.m.) in Winnipeg.


The Dauphin Kings won their round robin opener at the Centennial Cup in Estevan. Carson Cherepak made 30 saves as the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champions edged the Central Canada Hockey League champion Ottawa Jr. Senators 2-1. Luke Morris and Nakodan Greyeyes scored second period goals for the Kings. Dauphin’s next game is Sunday against Morden’s Trent Crane & William Irvine and the Summerside Western Capitals. The Maritime Junior Hockey League champions won their opener 4-1 over the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Soo Thunderbirds.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes opened their 10-game road trip with an 8-5 loss to the Lake Country DockHounds. David Washington and Logan Hill homered for the Fish.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Canadian offensive lineman and 2021 third overall CFL Draft pick Liam Dobson to a two-year contract. The defending Grey Cup champions also signed defensive back Tyrell Ford who was the football club’s 13th overall selection in the 2022 Draft.
