Sean Auginaldo of Morden defeated Jason Li of Shaftesbury 22-24, 21-13, 21-14 in the third place game in boys singles at the Provincial Junior Varsity Badminton Championships Friday at Sport Manitoba in downtown Winnipeg. Austin Wiebe of Garden Valley won the girls singles consolation final 21-12, 21-14 over Delaney Groot of Westwood. Marilou Delorme & Ava Hunter-Dreger of St. Jean lost the consolation final in girls doubles. As for the Provincial varsity championships – advancing to the round of 16 are Sebastien Hicks of St. Jean and Griffin Carnelley of Carman in boys singles; Mia Sawatzky of Miller in girls singles; Randie Doell & Sydney Last of Carman and Lex DeJesus & Haelen Galfo of Miller in girls doubles; Zeni Vanstone & Ty Love of Miami, Jayci Best and Jack Bausman of Carman and Madden Wiebe & Rowan Friesen of Garden Valley qualified in mixed doubles.


The Manitoba Moose and Milwaukee Admirals are going the distance. Keifer Sherwood had a goal and an assist as the Admirals downed Manitoba 5-3 and evened the American Hockey League’s best-of-five Central Division semifinal at two games apiece. Jansen Harkins had a goal and two assists for the Moose. The deciding fifth game goes tonight in Milwaukee.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost their pre-season opener 10-9 to the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. The Fish and Redhawks meet again this afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. Winnipeg will wrap up its exhibition schedule with three games against the Milkmen in Milwaukee on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. The Goldeyes will open the 2023 American Association season against the SouthShore RailCats in Gary on May 11th.


Matt Dunstone has earned a spot in the semifinals at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Champions Cup in Regina. Dunstone finished the round robin with a 5-0 record. Kerri Einarson and Jennifer Jones were 3-2; Kaitlyn Lawes and Reid Carruthers were 2-3.
