Trent Penner was the overtime hero for the Winkler Flyers Friday night at Hockey for all Centre in Winnipeg. Penner potted his ninth goal of the season 15 seconds into OT to lift Winkler past the Winnipeg Blues 2-1. Zach Nicolas had the Flyers lone goal in regulation. Winkler outshot the Blues 46-11.


Slade Sotheran scored twice and Derek Wiebe had a goal and three assists as the Pembina Valley Twisters downed Raiders 7-5 in Morris. Mike Heppner, Alex Van Denyze, Caelan Russell and Brett Bergman also scored for the Twisters.


Pembina Valley lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Interlake Lightning. Kam Thomas and Liam Goertzen scored in regulation for the Hawks.


The Pembina Tigers, Morden Thunder and Morris Mavericks were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Friday night. Max Jago had two goals and an assist and Karson McKay recorded the shutout as the Tigers blanked Portage Collegiate 4-0. The defending champion Thunder edged the Mountain Mustangs 3-2. Morris shaded the Garden Valley Zodiacs 2-1. The first place Mavericks improved to 4-0 on the season.


The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up three goals in the first period and three more in the second and lost 6-1 to the Pats in Regina. Quinn Mantei had the lone goal for the Wheat Kings.


Kerri Einarson lost 8-7 in an extra end to Tabitha Peterson of the United States in the women’s bronze medal game at the 2023 Pan Continental Championships at the Kelowna Curling Club. Brad Gusue will face Jongduk Park of South Korea in the men’s gold medal game.


The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team will face Mexico in the bronze medal game at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Canada lost 8-3 to the United States Friday and finished the Super Round with a 1 and 2 record. The Americans will meet Puerto Rico in the gold medal game. Canadian athletes have won 139 medals including 40 gold, 44 silver and 55 bronze.
