Manitoba champion Jennifer Jones will play in the final at the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Kamloops on Sunday night. Jones, Karlee Burgess, Mackenzie Zacharias, Lauren Lenentine and Emily Zacharias won their 10th straight game defeating Krista McCarville of Northern Ontario 8-5 in the 1-2 page playoff game. McCarville will face three-time defending champion Kerri Einarson in the semifinal Sunday afternoon. Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris downed Christina Black of Nova Scotia 9-4 in the 3-4 game.


The Ste. Anne Aces are one win away from advancing the SEMHL final. Owen Blocker scored his second goal of the game with 1:32 left in the third period as the Aces shaded the Portage Islanders 5-4 and now lead the best-of-five semifinal two games to none. Brenden Walker, Alex Tetrault and Braden Purtill also scored for Ste. Anne. Nick Henry, Doug Lawrence, Rene Hunter and Tanner Lesann replied for the Islanders who host game three Sunday night at Stride Place.


The Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn Falcons are Provincial AA High School Hockey champions. The Falcons defeated the Killarney/Wawanesa Raiders 5-1 in the final Saturday afternoon in Swan Lake. Birtle/Shoal Lake/Rossburn forward Colby Asselstine was named the MVP. The Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur Wildcats downed the Pembina Tigers 4-2 in the third place game.


The Winkler Flyers lost 4-3 to Swan Valley. Noah Wilson scored the tying goal with 33 seconds left and Collin Jennings won it for the Stampeders 41 seconds into overtime. Trent Penner, Trent Sambrook and Dalton Andrew did the goal scoring for the Flyers.


Slade Sotheran, Luke Van de Velde, Brett Bergman and Riley Goertzen scored first period goals and Logan Enns made 31 saves as the Pembina Valley Twisters downed the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League leading St. James Canucks 4-2 in Notre Dame. Sotheran scored 51 seconds into the game and Goertzen potted his 25th of the season with 32 seconds left in the opening frame. It was just the fourth regulation loss for the defending champion Canucks this season.


The Brandon Wheat Kings gave up five unanswered goals and lost 6-3 to the Pats in Regina. Nolan Ritchie, Nate Danielson and Evan Groening scored for the Wheat Kings.


The Winnipeg Jets acquired forward Nino Niederreiter from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Niederreiter, 30, has played 56 games for the Predators this season and has 28 points (18G, 10A) and 16 penalty minutes. The Chur, Switzerland native was originally drafted by the New York Islanders in the first round (fifth overall) in the 2010 NHL Draft and he has played 788 games for the Islanders, the Minnesota Wild, the Carolina Hurricanes, and Nashville and has recorded 396 points (199G, 197A) and 368 PIMs. Niederreiter has also played 82 playoff games and recorded 30 points (15G, 15A) and 56 PIMs.


Cole Maier scored the tying goal with 3:34 remaining in regulation and Declan Chisholm potted the winner 56 seconds into overtime as the Manitoba Moose edged the Milwaukee Admirals 4-3.
