Shaela Hayward of Carman and Nash Sugden of Morden have qualified for the finals at CurlManitoba’s Provincial U18 Championships at the Selkirk Curling Club after winning their respective 1-1 page playoff games Saturday night. Hayward got two in the eighth end and defeated Cassidy Dundas of the Heather 5-4 while Sugden scored three in the extra end and beat Rylan Campbell of Altona 8-5. Dundas will meet clubmate Bethany Allen and Campbell will take on Kieran Callewaert of Assiniboine Memorial in the semifinals Sunday at 9 a.m. 2023 women’s champion Dayna Wahl of Altona finished with a 2-3 round robin record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.


It was a busy Saturday in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League. Jaden Townsend potted the tying goal with 27 seconds left in regulation and Andrew Clark scored his third goal of the night 52 seconds into overtime as the Morden Bombers defeated Notre Dame 6-5. Anthony Florentino had a pair of goals for the Hawks. Robert Guimond scored the shootout winner as the Altona Maroons edged the Red River Wild 5-4. Patrick D’Amico scored in overtime to lift the Warren Mercs past the Portage Islanders 4-3. Brenden Walker scored three of Ste. Anne’s five first period goals as the defending champion Aces defeated Carman 7-1. Matt Miles had the lone goal for the Beavers.


The Winkler Flyers completed a weekend home-and-home sweep of the Niverville Nighthawks. Jayce Legaarden scored the tying goal with 1:20 left in third period and then potted the winner on the power play 3:33 into overtime as Winkler shaded the Nighthawks 5-4 in Niverville. Zach Nicolas also scored twice for the Flyers who trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after forty minutes. Blake (Daniel) Matheson had the other Winkler goal.


Acoyen Fehr scored the only goal of the shootout as the Pembina Valley Hawks slipped past the Winnipeg Bruins 5-4 at the Southdale Arena. Adrien McIntosh had a pair of goals in regulation for the Hawks while the rest went to Sam Delaquis and Haiden Friesen.


Canada won its preliminary round opener 11-0 over Germany at the 2024 World U18 Women’s Hockey Championship in Zug, Switzerland. Sienna D’Alessandro had a hat trick and Chloe Primerano had two goals and three assists for Team Canada. St. Adolphe’s Avery Pickering and Sara Manness of La Salle both picked up assists. Canada’s next game is Sunday against Czechia.


The Brandon Wheat Kings opened their six-game homestand with a 4-0 loss to Vancouver. Giants goaltender Brett Mirwald made 48 saves in recording the shutout. Ethan Eskit stopped 16 shots.


The Manitoba Moose lost 3-1 to Belleville at Canada Life Centre. Josh Currie and Graham McPhee each had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Jeffrey Viel had the lone goal for the Moose.


Grace Zumwinkle scored the first-ever PWHL hat trick and Maddie Rooney made 24 saves as Minnesota blanked Montreal 3-0 in front of 13,316 fans at Xcel Energy Centre in St. Paul. That’s the largest crowd to attend a professional women’s hockey game.
