The Pembina Valley Hawks will meet the Winnipeg Bruins in round two of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League playoffs. Kam Thomas scored twice and Raiden LeGall made 34 saves as Pembina Valley defeated the Yellowhead Chiefs 4-1 Saturday night in Morden. Carter Campbell and Cedrik Robidoux also scored for the Hawks who swept the best-of-five quarterfinal three games to none. The Brandon Wheat Kings will take on the Winnipeg Wild in the other semifinal.


Hockey Manitoba Provincial Championships that wrap up today include the CO-ED Under-15 Rural AA in Winkler and Rural A in Morden. The CO-ED Under-11 Rural AA Championship is in Portage.


The Winnipeg Ice scored five goals in a 10-minute span of the second period en route to an 8-3 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings at Westoba Place. Conor Geekie had a hat trick for the Ice who went 7-3 on their 10-game road trip. Nate Danielson, Nolan Flamand and Calder Anderson did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings.


The Winnipeg Jets five-game losing skid came to an end Saturday night at Canada Life Centre. Josh Morrissey had two goals and an assist as Winnipeg defeated Edmonton 7-5. Mark Scheifele, Morgan Barron, Dylan DeMelo, Adam Lowry and Kyle Capobianco also scored for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves. Leon Draisaitl had a hat trick for the Oilers who beat Winnipeg 6-3 Friday night in Edmonton.


Both Manitoba teams played their round robin openers Saturday afternoon at the Brier in London, Ontario. Matt Dunstone defeated Kelly Knapp of Saskatchewan 9-3. Reid Carruthers lost 6-4 to Tanner Horgan of Northern Ontario. Dunstone will face Jake Higgs of Nunavut on Sunday. Carruthers will take on Jamie Koe of Northwest Territories and Nathan Young of Newfoundland & Labrador.
