Madden Wiebe & Rowan Friesen of Garden Valley earned silver in mixed doubles at the Provincial Varsity High School Badminton Championships Saturday at Sport Manitoba in downtown Winnipeg. Rylee Normand & Justin Joubert of JH Bruns defeated Wiebe & Friesen 21-11, 21-3 in the final. Lex DeJesus & Haelen Galfo of Miller Collegiate won bronze in girls doubles. DeJesus & Galfo beat Randie Doell & Sydney Last of Carman 21-14, 21-19 in the third place game.


The Manitoba Moose were eliminated in the Calder Cup playoffs. Spencer Stastney scored the go-ahead goal with 27 seconds left in regulation to lift the Milwaukee Admirals past Manitoba 2-1 in the fifth and deciding game of their Central Division semifinal. Jansen Harkins’ fourth goal of the post-season at 18:03 of the third period tied the game at 1-1.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes pre-season game against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks was rained out Saturday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. The Redhawks were leading 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning when the skies opened up and the game was called shortly thereafter. Winnipeg will wrap up its exhibition schedule with three games against the Milwaukee Milkmen in Franklin, Wisconsin tonight, Monday & Tuesday. The Goldeyes will open the 2023 American Association season against the SouthShore RailCats in Gary on May 11th.


Kerri Einarson will meet Rachel Homan in the women’s final of the Grand Slam of Curling’s Champions Cup in Regina. Einarson, Val Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Dawn McEwen defeated Satsuki Fujisawa 12-0 in the semifinals. Matt Dunstone lost 8-3 to Brad Gushue in the men’s semifinals.
