The Winkler Flyers saw their 10-game points streak to start the 2023-24 season end Saturday night at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie. Noah Szabo’s power play goal with 17 seconds left in regulation gave the defending Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Steinbach Pistons a 4-3 victory over Winkler. Trent Penner, Jayce Legaarden and James Richards did the goal scoring for the Flyers. The Pistons lead 3-1 until Legaarden and Richards scored 21 seconds apart late in the third period.
The Pembina Valley Hawks fell 3-0 to the defending Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League champion Winnipeg Ice in Morden. Izabella Mann scored twice for the Ice while Laura Melizza made 16 saves in recording the shutout. Pembina Valley’s Kasia Rakowski faced 34 shots.
The Red River Wild and defending champion Ste. Anne Aces were winners in the SEMHL Saturday night. Wyatt Sabourin had two goals and an assist as Red River defeated Carman 6-3. Brett Armstrong, Jared Magne, Gavin Froese and Jonah Wasylak also scored for the Wild. Tristan Day, Brock Schwaluk and AJ Nychuk replied for the Beavers. Matt Bailey scored twice as Ste. Anne beat Ile des Chenes 7-2. Yvan Pattyn, Brett Meilleur, Jordan DePape, Brenden Walker and Braden Purtill also scored for the Aces. Justin Dumontier and Justin Tremblay did the goal scoring for the Northstars.
Carson Bjarnason made 28 saves and Roger McQueen scored his 10th goal of the season in the Brandon Wheat Kings 2-1 victory over the Saskatoon Blades at Westoba Place. Quinn Mantei also scored for the Wheat Kings.
The Winnipeg Jets three-game win streak came to an end Saturday night in Montreal. Nick Suzuki scored the only goal of the shootout and Jake Allen made 42 saves as the Canadiens defeated Winnipeg 4-3. Adam Lowry scored twice for the Jets. His first came on a penalty shot 4:28 into the opening period. Nino Niedereitter also scored for Winnipeg. Laurent Brossoit stopped 26 shots.
Ashton Sautner scored his second goal of the game with 46 seconds left in overtime to lift the Manitoba Moose past the Texas Stars 6-5. Brad Lambert, Danny Zhilkin, Jeff Malott and Axel Jonsson-Fjallby also scored for the Moose. Nikita Chibrikov chipped in with three assists.
Canadian boxers Tammara Thibeault and Wyatt Sanford captured gold medals at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile. Canadian athletes have won 87 medals including 32 gold, 25 silver and 30 bronze.
