The OCN Blizzard have joined the Winkler Flyers, Steinbach Pistons and Virden Oil Capitals in the second round of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League playoffs. Riley See scored 16:52 into the third overtime period to lift OCN past the Dauphin Kings 2-1 in the deciding seventh game of their West Division semifinal at the Roy H. Johnston Arena. The Blizzard will face the defending champion Pistons in the semifinals while the Flyers take on Oil Capitals. Game one in that series goes Friday night at the Centennial Arena.


The Telus Cup West Regional Hockey Championship begins today at Hockey for All Centre in Winnipeg. The Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League champion Brandon Wheat Kings play their preliminary round opener against the Saskatoon Blazers at 5 p.m. The host Winnipeg Wild meet the Thunder Bay Kings at 8:10 p.m.


The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 6-4 decision to the Moose Jaw Warriors Wednesday night at Westoba Place. Matthew Savoie scored twice and Dominion City's Denton Mateychuk had a goal and two assists for the Warriors who lead the Western Hockey League's best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal three games to none. Matteo Michels, Roger McQueen, Brett Hyland and Jayden Wiens did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings who host game four tonight.


The Winnipeg Jets wrap up their five-game homestand tonight when they meet the Calgary Flames at Canada Life Centre. Nino Niederreiter will be out roughly one week after sustaining a deep cut on his lower leg. The Jets forward left the game in the third period in a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday. Tyler Toffoli, who missed the game with an illness, will take Niederreiter’s spot on the third line alongside Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton.


The Manitoba Moose fell 5-2 to the Abbotsford Canucks. Sheldon Dries scored twice for the Canucks while Zach Sawchenko made 24 saves. Jeffrey Viel and Tyrel Bauer had the Manitoba goals. 


Canada will play its preliminary round opener against Finland today (6 p.m.) at the 2024 World Women's Hockey Championship in Utica, New York. Defenders Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne and Ashton Bell of Deloraine along with goaltender Kristen Campbell of Brandon are on Team Canada's roster. 


Brad Gushue has qualified for the playoffs at the World Men's Curling Championship in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Gushue, vice-skip Mark Nichols, second E.J. Harnden and lead Geoff Walker defeated Magnus Ramsfjell of Norway 7-4 this morning. Team Gushue has an 8-1 round robin record and will face Sweden's Niklas Edin at 12 p.m. Team Edin leads the standings with a 9-0 record. 


Swimming Canada is searching for a new site for the Olympic and Paralympic trials due to an extended closure of Montreal's Olympic pool. The Olympic Stadium's athletic sports complex is closed for four to six months due to a fire on March 21st. The trials were set for May 13th-19th. Swimming Canada says it will try to maintain those same dates while keeping the trials in the Montreal area ahead of this summer's Paris Games.
