The Carman Cougars and Pembina Tigers were winners in the Zone 4 High School Hockey League Wednesday night. Maysen Mazurat made 54 saves in recording the shutout as the Cougars blanked the Morden Thunder 3-0. Josh Hiebert, Ryan Penner and Ethan Wilde did the goal scoring for Carman. Karson McKay stopped all 28 shots he faced as the Tigers defeated the Mountain Mustangs 4-0. Easton Lounsbury, Rylan McDonald, Cole Patenaude and Russell Wall scored for Pembina. Portage Collegiate's game in Morris against the Mavericks was postponed and rescheduled to Friday. The playoff pairings are set. The first place Miller Aces will meet PCI, Mountain will take on Garden Valley, Pembina will meet Carman and Morden will face Morris. 


Sam Delaquis scored twice and Ryder Wolfe had three assists in the Pembina Valley Hawks 6-4 victory over the Interlake Lightning in Teulon. Cohen Pilkington, Kam Thomas, Acoyen Fehr and Liam Goertzen also scored for the seventh place Hawks who moved within four points of the Lightning and Winnipeg Thrashers who are tied for fifth place in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League. 


Dominik Petr and Nolan Flamand had two goals each as the Brandon Wheat Kings downed the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-2 at Westoba Place. Matteo Michels, Joby Baumuller and Jayden Wiens also scored for the Wheat Kings. Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason made 32 saves.


Canada's National Women's hockey team scored three times in the third period in a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the United States in front of 7,576 fans at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon Wednesday night. Renata Fast scored the game winner at 14:07 of the third period. Brianne Jenner, Laura Stacey and Deloraine's Ashton Bell also scored for Team Canada who outshot the Americans 28-16. Ann-Renée Desbiens made 14 saves. The Rivalry Series continues Friday in Regina. 


The round robin ends today at the 2024 Canadian U18 Curling Championships in Ottawa. Shaela Hayward of Carman has a 4-1 record; Rylan Campbell of Altona is 3-2 and Nash Sugden of Morden is 2-3. Hayward, Keira Krahn, India Young & Rylie Cox will meet Cailey Locke of Newfoundland & Labrador at 11:30 a.m. Campbell, Logan Zacharias, Nick Senff and Rylan Graham will face Mark Strang of Nova Scotia and Sugden, Tyler Fehr, Tanner Treichel and Ryan Thiessen will take on Tyler MacTavish of Ontario at 7:30 a.m.


It's day one of the Provincial High School Curling Championships at the Heather Curling Club in Winnipeg. Lauren Weselak, Annabelle Lanthier, Laycee Henderson & Kaitlyn McCallister of the Morden Thunder and Colton Olafson, Tristan Blight, Hunter Jeffries & Colby Nikkel of Portage Collegiate are representing Zone 4. The Provincial Mixed Doubles championship begins Friday at the Pembina Curling Club. Rylan Hiebert & Kamryn Klassen of Garden Valley are representing Zone 4.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have agreed to terms on a one-year extension with veteran safety Brandon Alexander. The 30-year-old Orlando native returns in 2024 for his 7th Canadian Football League season – all with the Blue Bombers. Alexander played 17 games last season and finished with 41 defensive tackles and two interceptions. He was named a West Division all-star for the second time in his career in 2023, and has totaled 211 defensive tackles, 20 special teams tackles, eight interceptions and six forced fumbles in 77 career games.
