Sam Sullivan and Ryan Orchard of Carman play their opening round matches today at Golf Manitoba’s Provincial Men's Match Play Championship at the Glendale Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg. Orchard will face Evan Nachtigall of Wheat City and Sullivan will meet Justin Price of Glendale. The winners advance to the round of 16. India Young of Carman will play Saturday in the women's quarterfinals. 


The Zone 4 champion Garden Valley Zodiacs will meet Steinbach Regional today at 2 p.m. and the Swan Valley Tigers Friday at 9 a,m. in their two round robin games at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship in Glenboro. The top two teams in each of the four Pools advance to the quarterfinals.


Zenith Vanstone of the Carman/Miami Cougars fast pitch team is the Manitoba High School Athlete of the Week. Vanstone was a huge contributor to the Cougars fast pitch team this season. Her versatile ability to play any position was a massive asset, along with her consistent reliability at bats. In 16 plate appearances, she had only one strikeout, nine doubles, and one triple which lead the Cougars to clench a spot in the zone tournament. Coach Courtney Milljour states, "Zen is a force within the sport.  Her natural ability to read the ball, willingness to help out any team member, and undeniable work ethic is constantly shown on and off the field.  Within this past year alone, this multi-sport athlete helped contribute to the zone 4 volleyball banner, win the Carman Co-ed badminton tournament, qualify as finalist in badminton zones, and competed at the Provincial badminton tournament.  To see her passion, drive, and dedication to all sports is not only outstanding, but motivational to everyone." In grade 11 she maintains a 90% academic average, while also participating in cross country and track and field.


The Pembina Valley Orioles and Altona Bisons were both winners Wednesday night. The Orioles plated four runs in the top of the second inning and four more in the seventh and beat the Carillon Sultans 11-6 in Ile des Chenes. Owen Goertzen had two hits and three rbi for Pembina Valley. Trent Peters singled, homered and drove in two runs as the Bisons downed the defending Manitoba Junior Baseball League champion Elmwood Giants 6-4 at Access Field. Pembina Valley and Altona each have 4-4 records.


The Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped a 3-2 decision to the Chicago Dogs in Rosemont, Illinois. Jackson Smith homered for the Fish who hit into four double plays. Winnipeg third baseman Dayson Croes had a pair of singles and extended his hitting streak to 14 games. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers walkthrough is scheduled from noon until 1 p.m. today. The Blue Bombers play their final pre-season game Friday night against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at IG Field. On Wednesday the football team added receiver/returner Janarion Grant to the roster from the suspended list.
