Goaltender Corinne Schroeder of Elm Creek and defenders Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne & Ashton Bell of Deloraine have been named to Canada’s National Women’s Hockey Team for the final three games of the 2023-24 Rivalry Series which include games in Saskatoon on February 7th and Regina on February 9th. The series finale is February 11th in St. Paul, Minnesota. This year’s Rivalry Series marks the fifth year the cross-border rivals will face-off in cities across Canada and the United States. Canada’s National Women’s Team currently trails the United States 3-1 in the 2023-24 series. All three Manitobans play in the Professional Women's Hockey League. Schroeder plays with New York, Larocque is with Toronto and Bell skates with Ottawa. 


The Steinbach Pistons, Winkler Flyers and Virden Oil Capitals remain in the top 10 of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s weekly Top 20 rankings. The MJHL's East Division leading Pistons (32-6-3) remain at number four; the Flyers (30-6-2-2) stayed at number six. The West Division leading Oil Capitals (29-6-2-3) moved from 10 to number nine. The Portage Terriers received honourable mention. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Flin Flon Bombers (34-2-2) are the number one ranked team in the country for the 13th week in a row.


The Manitoba Junior Hockey League/Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Showcase begins today at the Seven Oaks Sportsplex in Winnipeg. MJHL 20U Red will face SJHL 20U Gold at 12 p.m. MJHL 20U Black will meet SJHL 20U White at 3 p.m. and MJHL 18U White will take on SJHL 18U Blue at 6 p.m. Winkler Flyers bench boss Justin Falk is the head coach for MJHL 20U Red.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Canadian running back Johnny Augustine. He was scheduled to become a free agent next month. The 30-year-old Welland, Ontario native returns in 2024 for his sixth season with the Blue Bombers after first signing with the club in May of 2018. He has dressed for every game over the past three years, including all 18 last season as well as the Western Final and Grey Cup and finished second on the club in rushing with 267 yards on 45 carries, for a 5.9-yards per carry average. A valuable contributor on special teams, he added eight tackles on the kick cover units, which ranked sixth on the team.
