The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected eight players in the 2023 CFL Draft. The football club began the night by taking University of Regina defensive lineman Anthony Bennett with the eighth overall selection. With their second pick in the draft, 15th overall, Winnipeg selected Bishop’s University defensive back Jake Kelly. The Blue Bombers took Concordia University receiver Jeremy Murphy in round three; University of Regina defensive lineman Tanner Schmekel in round four; University of Manitoba defensive lineman Collin Kornelson in round five; Windsor University defensive back Bret MacDougall in round six; University of Alberta running back Jonathan Rosery in round seven and with their final pick Winnipeg selected University of Ottawa linebacker Max Charbonneau in round eight. Dontae Bull of Victoria was selected first overall by the Ottawa Redblacks. The 6-foot-7 offensive lineman started seven games at right tackle for Fresno State in 2022 before sustaining a season-ending broken leg on October 29th.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes begin spring training today at Shaw Park. The Goldeyes have 24 players under contract for the 2023 season. American Association clubs may carry up to 30 players during spring training. Winnipeg will play its season opener Thursday, May 11th on the road against the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
The Winnipeg Ice are one win away from advancing to the Western Hockey League final. Matthew Savoie, Connor McClennon and Owen Pederson scored power play goals and Daniel Hauser made 17 saves as Winnipeg downed the Blades 5-1 in Saskatoon. Zach Benson and Evan Friesen also scored for the Ice who lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final three games to none. Game four goes tonight at SaskTel Centre.
The Manitoba Moose Hockey Club is proud to announce Jimmy Oligny has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Winnipeg community during the 2022-23 season. This is the second consecutive season Oligny, 30, has been named Manitoba's IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year, and the fourth time in his AHL career between Manitoba and Milwaukee. Oligny created a new program in conjunction with the Kinship and Foster Family Network of Manitoba. Kinship and Foster Family Network of Manitoba provides kinship and foster parents with training, guidance and assistance to enhance their capacities, knowledge and skills to provide quality care. As part of the program, Oligny hosted foster families at Moose home games. The foster children and their caregivers received Moose merchandise, tickets to the game and met with Oligny post-game. Oligny is one of 32 finalists for the AHL's 2022-23 Yanick Dupré Memorial Award, honouring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League on Thursday, May 4th.
