The Winkler Flyers play their first of four pre-season games tonight (7 p.m.) when they face the Steinbach Pistons at the Centennial Arena. The Flyers and Pistons also meet Saturday in Steinbach. Winkler will wrap up its exhibition schedule with a home-and-home against the Selkirk Steelers next week.


David White is the low Manitoban heading into round two of the 61st Canadian Senior Men's Golf Championship. White opened with a one-over par 73 Tuesday at the Big Sky Golf Club in Pemberton, British Columbia and is in a tie for 19th place. Todd Fanning and reigning provincial champion Jay Doyle were 74. Dan Scanlon was 75; Ken Warwick was 77; Rob Oliphant fired an eight-over par 80, Gord Hudson was 81; David Klowak was 88 and David Powell was 89. Dave Bunker of Ridgeway, Ontario and Stephen Jensen of England share the lead at seven-under par. Fanning, Doyle and Scanlan are in a tie for fourth place, eight shots back of Alberta in the inter-provincial team competition. 


Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder Max Murphy and third baseman Dayson Croes have been named to the American Association’s post-season All-Star Team. Murphy finished the season tied for second in the 12-team circuit with 26 home runs. The Robbinsdale, Minnesota native’s 84 runs batted in, 48 extra-base hits, and 213 total bases ranked third in the league. Croes hit .351, good for fourth in the American Association, while his 135 hits led the league. The native of Noord, Aruba was second on the club with 67 RBIs and 41 bases on balls and tied for second on the team with two triples. He struck out just 36 times in 439 plate appearances.


Three Canadian Olympic gold medalists were the first players to sign with the Professional Women's Hockey League's team in Ottawa. Forwards Emily Clark and Brianne Jenner, and goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer agreed to terms Tuesday on three-year contracts. The league opens its inaugural season in January with teams in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul and New York City.


Canada's men's basketball team will take on Slovenia today (7:30 a.m.) in the quarterfinals at the FIBA World Cup in the Philippines. Canada clinched a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics with a win over Spain on Sunday in their group-stage finale.
