The Warren Mercs are one win away from capturing the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League championship. Braydon MacDonald, Johnny Lazo and Trent Genyk scored during a four-and-a-half minute span of the third period as Warren defeated Notre Dame 4-2. Chase Faulkner also scored for the hometown Mercs who lead the best-of-seven final three games to none. Connor Hamonic had both goals for the Hawks. Game four goes Thursday in Notre Dame.

 

The Pembina Valley Twisters are into round two of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League playoffs. Nathan Ayotte had a goal and three assists as Pembina Valley downed the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge Twins 6-3. TJ Matuszewski, Cody Clark, Merek Degraeve, Nico Vigier and Curtis Rebeck also scored for the Twisters who took the best-of-seven quarterfinal four games to one. Pembina Valley will face the Transcona Railer Express in the semifinals.

 

The Zone 4 High School Hockey League All-Stars will meet Winnipeg Elite tonight (7 p.m.) in Pilot Mound. The Zone 4 All-Stars roster includes goaltenders Rowan Cherkas of the PCI Trojans and Gabe Mondry of the Carman Cougars; defensemen Dillan Thiessen of the Miller Aces, Bailey Cousins of the Morden Thunder, Alex Kubinec of the Pembina Tigers, Hunter Mangin of the Prairie Mountain Mustangs, Brook Wood of Carman and Brandon Ferg of Portage Collegiate and fowards Noah Bergen of GVSD, Xander Buhr & Gavin Hildebrandt of Miller, Brodie Desrochers of Pembina, Carson Dubois & Layne Rands of PCI, Damon Johnson of the Morris Mavericks, Ryan Orchard & Slade Sotheran of Carman, Tyler Van de Velde & Joel Vigier of the Mustangs and Zane Sheldon of Morden.

 

Jansen Harkins scored twice and Kyle Connor potted his career high 39th goal of the season and added three assists as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Blackhawks 6-4 in Chicago. Josh Morrissey, Blake Wheeler and Nickolaj Ehlers also scored for the Jets who received a 32-save performance from Connor Helleybuck.

 

The Vancouver Canucks dealt defenseman Travis Hamonic to the Ottawa Senators for a 2022 third round draft pick. The 31-year-old St. Malo native has appeared in only 24 games for the Canucks this season, registering seven points and six penalty minutes. Hamonic is in the first year of a two-year, $6-million deal, carrying a cap hit of $3 million.

 

Mikey Eyssimont tied the game in regulation and scored the shootout winner as the Manitoba Moose edged the Iowa Wild 3-2. Manitoba's point streak has now hit a season-high nine consecutive games with a record of 7-0-1-1.

 

Eight Provincial High School Varsity Basketball champions were crowned this past weekend. Glenboro/Baldur girls & Glenboro boys won the "A" championships; Prairie Mountain girls & Gabrielle Roy boys captured the "AA" titles; St. James girls & Neelin boys won the "AAA" finals and Dakota girls & St. Paul's boys captured the AAAA championships.
