The Morden Thunder are Zone 4 High School baseball champions.

Acoyen Fehr had three hits, three stolen bases and scored five runs as Morden defeated the Garden Valley Zodiacs 7-4 in the final of the league tournament Tuesday in Altona.

Hudson Nikkel had four hits and was stellar in the outfield for the Thunder who finished league play in second spot behind the first place Zodiacs.

"We're really happy and proud of the guys," said Morden coach Jeff Andrews. "It's a huge accomplishment. We've had a really good team, a good core group of kids here for the last couple of years and super happy for the grade 12 guys to get the opportunity to win the banner in their final year. It's also a great thing for some of our younger guys to be a part of that championship and hopefully carry that positive play into the provincials for sure."

Andrews described the final against the Zodiacs as nerve-wracking.

“Garden Valley did a really good job of shutting us down throughout the first four innings. They were timely with some big hits with runners in scoring position and we just kept stranding runners. Things kind of changed for us later in the game as we were able to get some timely hits of our own. Some guys hit the ball with power and were able to manufacture some runs and come from behind as we've kind of done all year with this group. They've shown the ability to have some resiliency and come back and that was the case in the final against Garden Valley. They're a good team and we're super happy with how it obviously ended and how our guys responded when we needed them to."

Bryson Yaschyshyn had three hits and started Morden’s rallies in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The Thunder will represent Zone 4 at the Provincial High School Baseball Championship next weekend in Reston.

"We know we're going to have to play some really solid baseball,” noted Andrews. “I think that's a characteristic of our team. We've been pretty good defensively and we've been hitting the ball really well and we've had some great pitching. Those are real important things if you want to have a successful baseball season and luckily, we have all those. We have some great catchers back there too which command the game. We’re expecting to see some really good baseball there. We know Boissevain has got a really strong team, and we'll have to be at our best and we're looking forward to the opportunity to showcase what we can do."
