The Trans Canada Trail is receiving $30,000 from Access Credit Union (ACU) to help upgrade the section between Altona and Gretna.

Jake Enns is chair of the Trans Canada Trail Committee of Rhineland.

"We're going to spread quarter inch crushed rock. It takes about 2,000 yards from Altona to Gretna," he said. "It will improve the walking and the cycling on it. People really enjoy the half mile that we did already and we've got lots of positive comments on that."

Enns notes the trail runs along the abandoned CP Rail line which was donated to the Trans Canada Trail. He says the total cost of the gravel will run in the range of $120,000.

Access Credit Union Vice Chair Curt Letkeman is also a member of ACU's Community Investment Committee.

"Access Credit Union, we pride ourselves in the investments we make in the community. We've been told we're one of the more generous credit unions in Canada when it comes to community investment and for us it's all about building communities. It's about improving the lives of our members, our communities, any way we can help and partner with people who want to further and improve their communities, we're excited to do that."

Funds are continuing to be raised for the project with next steps to include planting native grasses and trees and installing rest stops.
