A 36 year old Winkler man has been charged with Forcible Confinement, Theft of Motor Vehicle and Driving without a Licence after a vehicle with a two year old girl inside was stolen Thursday afternoon from a business on 1st Street.
Winkler Police received the call just before 3 o'clock, and learned the mother had gone into the business intending to return immediately to the car. As she entered the store, a male suspect got into her vehicle, and drove away with the child still inside.
Police from Winkler, Morden and Altona were immediately called into the area, with an electronic device with GPS capabilities inside the vehicle used to coordinate the response.
Just seven minutes after the call, a Winkler police officer found the stolen vehicle travelling on a gravel road just northwest of the city (on Road 14 N between Road 23 W and Road 22 W). The officer blocked the road with his patrol car, stopping the stolen vehicle, with the suspect taken into custody as numerous additional officers arrived on scene. The child was still in the car, unharmed, and returned to her family.
The suspect and victim were not known to each other, and police believe he was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident. He was remanded into custody, and will appear in Winnipeg Provincial Court today.
