Council and administrators with the Municipality of Rhineland recently met with representatives of the three Local Urban Districts (LUDs) for their annual meeting. The municipality is home to three LUDs - Gretna, Plum Coulee and Rosenfeld.

Reeve Don Wiebe says it was an opportunity to talk about community aspirations and concerns.

"Topics included housing, policing, mill rates, immigration, economic development, infrastructure and particularly, wastewater lagoons in all three LUDs. The format was informal and the council members and LUD members had an opportunity exchange perspectives and concerns," he explained. "Although there's a lot of common issues, each of the LUDs have their own unique challenges and the LUD members are enthusiastic advocates for their representative communities."

Meantime, officials with the municipality attended the recent Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) spring conference and trade show in Brandon.

A piece of heavy equipment caught Wiebe's attention as he toured through over 100 exhibits set up at the trade show.

"It was a washboard rake and scraper," said Wiebe. "We have a lot of washboards, so this was intriguing."

He explained, this piece of equipment levels washboard on gravel roads and can be towed by a large truck.

"Hopefully, we can get a demo and that would help us with some of the complaints we get about our roads."

Wiebe added, the conference also included a keynote address on developing collaborative communication skills, as well as breakout sessions on housing, economic development, drainage and healthcare. Overall, he says the conference was very informative.
