The condition and safety of Highway 14 have been addressed in a letter to Manitoba Highways from the City of Winkler.

Mayor Henry Siemens says the council has voiced its concern about deep potholes on the roadway, especially at the intersections with Highway 32 (1st Street), Main Street and 15th Street.

Siemens notes council is very concerned with the state of the road, adding they find many drivers are having to veer around the holes to avoid them.

"We are very concerned about the condition that we see in those corners. There's a lot of traffic right there, and much of that traffic is turning, and that creates significant wear and tear on those roads. It creates deep potholes, it creates big potholes. What we're seeing now is traffic veering around them as they are mid-intersection."

In its communication to Highways, Siemens says Council asked for additional consideration be given to fixing the highway. "Highways has been out this year, they have patched them at least twice that I have seen."

Council feels a more significant solution is needed, and one that is longer term, added Siemens.

Meanwhile, Siemens says council also approached highways requesting dedicated left-hand turning signals at the intersection of Highways 14 and 32. "There, again, have been a number of near misses."

Ultimately, Siemens said Winkler Council is hoping Highways will consider adding turn signals at that intersection, as well as give more serious thought to a solution for the quality and maintenance of those roads.
