Winkler Fire Department responded to a small structure fire in Friedensfeld late Wednesday afternoon.

The call came in around 5:35 p.m., and Chief Richard Paetzold says crews found two vehicles, a greenhouse structure and various outdoor stored materials a blaze when they arrived on site.

The owners of the property, and neighbours, were attempting to douse the flames with garden hoses when firefighters got on scene and took over, ultimately extinguishing the fire. There is no damage estimate available at this time, and there were no injuries.

Paetzold says the cause was a controlled burn which got out of control.

Meanwhile, crews also responded to a grass fire in Friedensfeld late Tuesday afternoon.

With that in mind, the Department is reminding area residents it's that time of year to be mindful of the fire danger level when conducting burning activities. The current level is available on the WFD website, and the fire danger sign in front of the firehall on Pembina Avenue in Winkler. As of Thursday morning (May 4th), the Fire Danger Level was 3 in the City of Winkler and Ward 1 of R.M. of Stanley, and Level 2 in the City of Morden and Ward 2 of the R.M. of Stanley.
