The Winkler Skating Club offers programs to the community whether someone is looking to skate for the first time, or build on skills they've been learning for years.

To show off some of this hard work, they held their annual ice show last weekend.

"It was so much fun. It's great to see how much the kids improve from October until now, it's a great time," says Sydney Dyck, a coach for CanSkate.

She started in the same program when she was three years old. She was coached by Janelle Friesen but they now coach in CanSkate together.

"It's awesome now to be able to give back and coach with the ones who coached me because they're like family."

Friesen adds, "it's really just a fundamental class to teach obviously the fundamentals of skating for absolutely any kid. Whether they want to just learn to skate for fun, whether they want to become a hockey player or a figure skater, it's just a great program all around."

Madelyn Toews was named the STARSkater of the Year.

Madelyn Toews is one of the current skaters but also helps with the younger students.

She mentioned that the ice show was a fun time, and it was amazing to win the Winkler Skating Club's STARSkater of the Year award.

"I did not expect it. My mom kept it a secret and I did not think I was going to get it. I felt very surprised."
