A 32-year-old woman from Winkler will be charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm following an incident at a local grocery on Saturday afternoon, according to Winkler Police Service.

In a news release issued Sunday afternoon, the department explained officers and paramedics were called to the scene after the woman, reportedly in an agitated state, aggressively approached a 20-year-old female employee who was helping an 81-year-old man who was shopping at the store. Police say the victims and the suspect were not known to each other.

When police arrived on scene, they found the suspect outside of the store, believed to have been under the influence of methamphetamine, and attempting to flee. She was arrested and, due to her level of intoxication at the time, noted police, was brought to hospital where she was treated and released the following day.

The 81-year-old victim was transported to hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released later in the evening.

The suspect remains in custody.
