Some parts of southern Manitoba may get an early shot of winter tonight.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for the Carman, Brunkild, Headingly, and Portage la Prairie areas.

Rain this afternoon will change to snow this evening with 10-15cm possible in the Portage and Selkirk areas.

Meantime, Environment Canada says we may be effected by an El Nino this winter.

An El Nino occurs every 3-4 years when warm ocean currents come from the coast.

Meteorologist Dave Phillips believes even though an El Nino is predicted to arrive this winter, in Canada there is never a guarantee with conditions switching from one extreme to the next in a matter of minutes.

Phillips adds they won't have a definite answer until the beginning of December.  He notes with warm winters come extreme dry conditions as well.
