Teen hero: 13-year-old praised for quick thinking during Morden apartment fire
A 13-year-old is being heralded for her courage and live-saving actions during kitchen fire at an apartment complex in Morden last week. Morden Fire and Rescue Chief, Andy Thiessen, says the teen took quick action and pulled the building’s fire alarm to alert neighbours, grabbed a fire extinguisher from the common hallway, safely evacuated her younger siblings, called out for her mom, who was in the shower, and attempted to extinguish the fire - all before fire fighters arrived. "She was very aggressive in warning the people to get out, which is exactly what we teach them," he added. In fact, Thiessen says the teen credited her quick thinking to the fire safety presentations the department's public education team delivered at her school. "It was nice to see that they actually listen to what we're asking them to do." "I don't think she really understood the complexity of the action she took," added Thiessen. "So, kudos to her." Because of the young girl's quick thinking, about 40 to 50 people were safely evacuated. "She did a wonderful thing," said Thiessen. He noted, this story also speaks volumes about his team's incredible work and the collaboration with local schools. "Not all school divisions allow that to happen, and this is just proof that it does help." Eventually, the oil on fire in the pan burned itself out and the fire went out on its own. Fire fighters ensured the flames didn't extend into the walls of the apartment and cleared out the smoke. People were allowed back into their homes within half an hour. With files from Robyn Wiebe
