Over 60 athletes will lace up their skates on January 5th, 2019 for the 6th annual Skate Pink 12-hour co-ed ringette tournament held annually in St. Jean Baptiste, MB. Athletes participating range from National Ringette League players, to Junior A hockey players, to beginner athletes in our community. Players are divided into three teams, each team playing a minimum of eight 40-minute run-time games throughout the day, for a total of twelve games over twelve hours, from 9am to 9pm.
Funds are raised for Breast Cancer Research through player registration, silent auction, social, merchandise, direct donations and fling a ring. Skate Pink also hosts a Bud n Spud in honour of the late Dylan Berard, a local 17-year-old boy who passed away in 2016. Funds from the Bud n Spud are donated to Make a Wish Canada as per Dylan’s parents’ wishes.
The Skate Pink organizing committee has grown from two to eleven members over the years. “We have a truly unique group of organizers for this event. The event is put on entirely by local young women between the ages of 20-25.” says co-founder, Karine Sabourin, “It’s a great example of what youth can accomplish as well as a tangible example for young girls in our community that they are capable of creating important, lasting change in their communities and the world. We hope it can empower others to do the same.”

SKATE PINK

Skate Pink was founded in 2014 by Karine Sabourin and Tashia Dreger as a method of promoting ringette in the local community while empowering women to support one another through the raising of funds for Breast Cancer Research. In the first year, the event raised roughly $5,000. In 2018, the event raised over $15,000, bringing the grand total raised to over $50,000. For more information, please visit www.skatepink.ca
